Opioids & Heroin: 907 Overdoses in Philadelphia in 2016

Today in America is in the midst of one of the worst drug epidemics of recent time: opioids. Opioids are pain killers that range from pills such as OxyContin, Vicodin, or Percocet, to the well-known drugs, heroin. The Center for Disease Control (CDC) estimates that in 2015, 33,000 people died of an opioid overdose. Each year U.S. doctors write 250 million prescriptions for pain medicine, equivalent to one bottle per adult. With addiction numbers rising, and the number of deadly overdoses nearly quadrupling since the 90's, law enforcement, cities, doctors, and even pharmaceutical industries are looking for solutions. Opioid use and abuse, like most things, is a complex problem that takes many different solutions, so we'll look at what those are and what's being done here in Philadelphia.
